Dry ice consists of frozen CO2 , the temperature of which is about -79 °C. In dry ice blasting, the following physical properties are exploited: different material properties at temperature differences, gas expansion of dry ice on impact and the blasting medium hardness at different flow rates of compressed air.

The hardness of dry ice is about 2 mol (equivalent to the hardness of gypsum). Due to the compressed air acceleration, the dry ice reaches a 2 to 3 times higher hardness. The smaller the angle to the cleaning object, the more dry ice is brought between the dirt and the cleaning object, thereby blasting off the dirt.
