Fat stains on the wall Sprinkle talcum powder on a discarded clean powder puff and rub over the stain. Repeat immediately until the stain is removed.
Or mix a paste of cornstarch with water. Apply, let sit for a few hours, then brush off. Repeat if it still didn't work the first time.

Whiten carpets. Generously sprinkle salt over carpet. Leave on for about an hour, then vacuum.
Apply lukewarm vinegar water to carpet with a sponge and rub in well. Allow to dry. The colors will shine again. (Mix water and vinegar in a 10:1 ratio).

Or sprinkle talc (talcum) or cornstarch on the fresh stain. Rub in well and let sit until the stain is absorbed. Brush off and rub with a damp cloth.

Glass table tops Rub in a little lemon juice. Dry with paper kitchen towels and rub with newspaper until shiny.

Oak Furniture If your oak furniture needs freshening, heat some beer in a wide basin and wash the furniture with an ordinary rag. Dry immediately with a clean rag. The furniture will look like new again.

Rinsing Glasses. Never put your fine glasses in the dishwasher - especially ones with gold rims.
Always slide glasses with thick bottoms into the warm water sideways - not bottom first, or they could easily break from the sudden heating.
Crystal glasses will shine beautifully if rinsed in warm water with a little vinegar added.
Glasses should only be dried with dry, lint-free cloths (preferably linen).

Glass problems Vases with very narrow necks can be cleaned by filling them with hot water, putting in two teaspoons of vinegar and some rice, and shaking vigorously.
Glass decanters can be filled with a finely chopped large potato and warm water and cleaned by shaking firmly.

Chemineé Vinegar cleans the brick surround of the fireplace. Dip a hand brush in vinegar and scrub quickly. Immediately afterwards, sponge to absorb the moisture.
Rub off any sooty spots with a plastic eraser. This works especially well on fireplaces made of porous natural stone.

**Cigarette smoke Use a damp towel as a fan and swirl it around the room. The smoke will quickly disappear.
Place four bowls of vinegar in the corners of the room where smokers congregate.
Or spread small plates with activated charcoal around the room to improve stale party air.

Remove Gum. Press ice cubes on gum until it becomes brittle and can be broken away. Then use stain remover to remove any remaining traces.

Mend a burn stain. Pull some fibers from the carpet with razor blade or tweezers. Place the fibers over the burn hole. Put all-purpose glue over the spot and press the fibers into it. Place a paper kitchen towel and a heavy book on top. This will cause the glue to dry slowly and the burn hole will be gone.
